Mt.Kanchenjunga, standing at an astounding 8,586m, is the second highest mountain in Nepal, the third highest in the world, and arguably the most romantic. Located in the remote northeastern corner of Nepal, Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) was created in 1981. In the Taplejung District, where Mt Kanchenjuinga towers, there are an astonishing eleven peaks that rise above 7000m. The conservation area is very unique in the sense that it has teamed up with the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China and Sikkim of India to make a tri-national peace park, spanning the three nations. It is a global hotspot for plant biodiversity with experts identifying twenty-three unique species of rhododendrons growing in the area.
Tucked within these hidden valleys, one can encounter rich forests that support more than 250 species of birds and endangered wildlife. A few days of walking will lead you to high-elevation pastures where yaks graze languidly and colorful alpine flowers flourish. In this eastern Himalayan setting, glacial streams cut through high ridges creating remote and steep valleys where traditional farming practices are a way of life.
Throughout the KCA, you will encounter a medley of ethnicities such as the Limbus, Sherpas, and Tamangs, that continue to practice traditional subsistence lifestyles. The Kanchenjunga area is one of the most remote and beautiful trekking areas in Nepal and remains untouched and well-preserved. Kanchenjunga region trekking trails start from 1200 meters (4,000ft) and ascend to 5180 meters (17,094ft) above sea level. This epic journey to the little visited third tallest mountain in the world will be an adventure that you will never forget.
High Himalayan Trekking offers camping and tea house trekking for 10 days to 30 days hiking treks to all of the Kanchenjunga destinations.
