Dolpa remains a truly isolated corner of Nepal. Time has stood still here as inhabitants of Tibetan stock continue to live, cultivate and trade the way they have for done for centuries.
Dolpa is located in the Shey Phoksundo National park of mid-western Nepal, behind the Dhaulagiri massif, towards the Tibetan plateau which is cut off by a series of very high passes and is closed due to heavy snow most of the year. The Dolpa region is endowed with high passes, rare flora and fauna, sweeping vistas, and rich traditional Tibetan culture.
Dolpo region is considered to be one of the most remote regions of Nepal and contains an abundance of Himalayan peaks, hidden lands, and isolated rural communities. It is one of the few places in the world not yet hit by globalization, modernity and development, making this region exceptional and unique. The biggest national park of Shey Phoksundo spreads over an area of 3555 sq.km and is home to blue sheep, musk deer, ghoral, thar, and the exquisite snow leopards.
This unforgettable trek led to the masterpiece “Snow Leopards” by Peter Mathiesons, a bestselling spiritual novel. The region holds the deepest lake in Nepal, Phoksundo Lake. The lake is surrounded by jutting cliffs and is full of arresting turquoise fresh water which can touch the very depth of every human heart searching for peace and tranquility. While exploring the ancient monasteries and breathtaking mountains of this region, you will encounter native locals living a semi-nomadic lifestyle based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Due to the extreme environment of this region, their lives are not easy yet what they lack in material goods, they have in spiritual wealth.
Trekking through this part of Nepal gives you the opportunity to enjoy and experience the traditional culture and the beautiful hospitality of the native locals. Trekking in this area is an adventure that is full of passion, excitement and is above all, an unforgettable experience of a lifetime.
